With the increasing reliance on web browsers for information, shopping, and communication, users are becoming more conscious of how they interact with digital content. One growing concern is the prominence of sponsored links in search engine results and website pages. While these links help fund free internet services, they also raise questions about transparency, user control, and the future of online advertising.
Understanding Sponsored Links
Sponsored links, also known as paid advertisements, are placements that companies pay search engines and websites to display. These links often appear at the top of search results, marked with labels such as "Ad" or "Sponsored." While they may be relevant to users' queries, they are primarily designed to generate revenue for platforms rather than provide the most organic and objective results.
Why Avoid Sponsored Links?
- Lack of Transparency: Although most search engines label sponsored content, it is not always clear to users whether a result is organic or paid.
- Bias in Search Results: Search engines prioritize advertisers willing to pay more, which may lead to less relevant or lower-quality content being displayed before more informative alternatives.
- Potential for Misinformation: Some sponsored links promote misleading or low-quality websites that prioritize sales over accuracy.
- Privacy Concerns: Many sponsored ads rely on user tracking and data collection, raising concerns about online privacy.
How Can We Avoid Ads?
When searching for anything in Google, for example, the initial results provided are headed by “Sponsored” websites:

You must scroll further down the page until you no longer see “Sponsored”.
Cisco Umbrella DNS Filtering
With the help of Cisco Umbrella (included in AT’s Managed Workstation) we can block access to those “Sponsored” links. The “Sponsored” links will still be present and can be clicked on, but the user will only receive a block page from Cisco Umbrella. In addition to protecting users from “Sponsored” links Cisco Umbrella can also block:
- Banner Ads – Display ads appearing on websites, often placed in headers, sidebars, or footers.
- Pop-up and Pop-under Ads – Ads that open in new windows or tabs, sometimes hidden behind the active browser window.
- Video Ads – Pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll ads embedded in video content on platforms like YouTube.
- Search Engine Ads – Sponsored results appearing at the top of search engine queries.
- Social Media Ads – Paid promotions and sponsored posts appearing in users' social feeds.
- Tracking and Retargeting Ads – Ads that follow users across different websites based on their browsing history.
- Interstitial Ads – Full-screen ads that appear between content loads on websites and mobile apps.
- Malvertising (Malicious Ads) – Ads that contain malware or redirect users to harmful sites.

The recent Women's Executive Forum hosted by the Association Forum was not just a conference; it was a movement - Unstoppable. As female executives, we gathered to embrace our leadership unapologetically and to share our unique perspectives and strengths. We were inspired by Artesha Moore, President & CEO of Association Forum and the 2025 Woman of Influence, Cie Armstead.
One of the key takeaways from the forum was the importance of data in making us unstoppable. By leveraging data, we can make informed decisions and drive impactful changes within our organizations. Additionally, the forum emphasized the need for self-care and personal growth. Taking care of ourselves allows us to be more effective leaders and better support our teams.
We also discussed the concept of code-switching and the importance of choosing who we show to the world. It's all about being authentic and embracing our strengths. Collaboration was highlighted as one of the best ways to lead, as we can borrow strengths from each other and build trust within our teams.
The forum encouraged us to ask for what we need and to gift our strengths to others. We are unique, and it's essential to recognize and celebrate our individuality. By doing so, we can cultivate our peace and create a more inclusive and dynamic future for all. |

|
In addition to these insights, we were energized by our keynote speaker, Dr. Wendy Borlabi, founder of Borlabi Consulting, a performance psychology firm. Dr. Borlabi currently works with the Chicago Bulls team to help them develop the mental toughness needed to perform their job. Her insights in how to juggle life when it interjects and remain consistent, in focus and in control of our emotions was a takeaway I am integrating into my life. Let's continue to support and uplift each other, sharing our experiences and insights.Together, we can create a legacy of empowerment and inclusivity. I know, for me, the Women’s Executive Forum will remain on my annual list of must attend conferences.
Huge thank you to Association Forum! |

|

| Below are a few of the book recommendations Dr. Borlabi shared to further our growth and understanding. Some of the notable mentions include children’s books, and yes, she did say the same message is delivered in the kids’ book, so save your time 😉. I’ve already added these to my reading list. |

A well-structured menu is essential for a positive user experience on any website or application. Here’s a guide to help you design intuitive and user-friendly menu structures:
- Keep It Simple - Simplicity is key. Avoid cluttering your menu with too many options. Stick to the essentials and group related items together. A clean, straightforward menu helps users find what they need quickly.
- Use Descriptive Labels - Ensure that menu labels are clear and descriptive. Users should be able to understand what each menu item represents at a glance. Avoid using jargon or ambiguous terms.
- Prioritize Important Items - Place the most important or frequently used items at the top of the menu. This makes them easily accessible and reduces the time users spend searching for key functions.
- Implement Logical Grouping - Group related items together in a logical manner. For example, group all account-related options under a single “Account” menu. This helps users navigate more intuitively.
- Maintain Consistency - Keep the menu structure consistent across all pages of your website or application. This helps users build familiarity and reduces confusion.
- Consider User Flow - Design your menu structure based on the typical user journey. Think about the paths users are likely to take and ensure the menu supports these flows seamlessly.
- Use Sub-Menus Sparingly - Avoid using too many sub levels in your menu. Excessive sub levels can overwhelm users and make navigation more complex. They can also be challenging for some users, especially on mobile devices. Use them sparingly and ensure they are easy to interact with.
- Ensure Mobile Compatibility - Design your menu to be responsive and mobile-friendly. Consider using a hamburger menu for mobile devices to save space while still providing easy access to all menu items.
- Provide Visual Cues - Use visual cues such as icons, colors, or highlights to guide users through the menu. These cues can help users quickly identify different sections and understand the menu structure.
- Test for Accessibility - Ensure your menu is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Implement keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and sufficient contrast for text and background colors.
- Utilize Card Sorting - Use card sorting techniques to understand how users categorize information. This method involves users organizing content into groups that make sense to them, providing valuable insights into how to structure your menu.
- Conduct Usability Testing - Regularly test your menu structure with real users to identify any issues or areas for improvement. Gather feedback and make necessary adjustments to enhance usability.
- Offer a Search Function - Include a search function as a backup for users who may have difficulty navigating the menu. This provides an alternative way to find specific content quickly.
By following these guidelines, you can create a menu structure that is intuitive, efficient, and user-friendly. A well-designed menu enhances the overall user experience and helps users achieve their goals with ease. |
